PICO National Network to Hold Press Call to Announce Massive, Faith-Based Voter Registration and Education Campaign

Washington, DC— With pain and unrest in Ferguson, gridlock on immigration reform, and historic inequality of wealth in America, it has never been clearer that in our democracy some voices are being heard and others are not.

A new national campaign, Let My People VOTE is being officially launched today, Thursday, September 4, by PICO National Network—the nation’s largest faith-based organizing network in the U.S. working with 1,000 religious congregations in more than 200 cities and towns. This is a massive multi-racial and multi-faith-based effort, spanning 15-states to engage and turn out 350,000 new or low-propensity voters in the 2014 election and beyond, whose voices have been ignored and who have been systematically locked out of the voting process.

As part of the campaign, PICO federations recently began unofficial roll-outs in several states, in the last few weeks, with the recruitment and training of thousands of grassroots leaders. Local leaders also plan to dramatically increase mobilizing voter registration and voter education efforts in cities such as Ferguson and St. Louis, Mo.

In our temptation to despair we remember the words of David in Psalm 28:2,”Hear my cry for mercy, as I call to you for help, as I lift up my hands toward your most holy place.” With those words in mind, faith leaders and advocates will seek to empower and engage voters in black, Latino, and poor communities to realize our power to help heal our nation by voting and encouraging our neighbors to do the same. Together, through Let My People VOTE, we have the power to change the moral crises our country faces.
